The gaming industry is thriving in places all around the world. With this situation in mind, the Indian government has decided to develop the Digital Gaming Research Initiative in India. The Indian government hopes to improve the gaming ecosystem in India as well as promote and popularise Indian culture through this programme.
According to a PTI report, the Science and Engineering Research Board's (SERB) Digital Gaming Research Initiative will have three verticals: R&D in learning and leisure gaming platforms, collaborative technical design process: SERB Game Labs, and immersive game prototypes with a focus on Indian culture and values.
SERB Secretary Sandeep Verma shared the news on Twitter, saying that the Digital Gaming Research Initiative will be launched to develop and implement high-end technologies for immersive gaming environments such as intensive graphics, VR (virtual reality), AR (augmented reality), console-based designs, sensors, and mobile games. "Innovation will encompass cross-disciplinary study in engineering, computer science, visual graphics, creative arts, and social science," he explained.
He also stated that the project will concentrate on the creation of Indian gaming engines, procedural content generators, design patents, and copyrights on the player and community-centric games, to mention a few.

Separately, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has established the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comic (AVGC) Promotion Task Force to recommend strategies to realise and grow local capacity for serving our markets and global demand. This task force will be led by the Secretary of Information and Broadcasting, and it will include secretaries from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and the Ministry of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.
The task force will include representatives from the state governments of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana, as well as heads of education bodies such as the All India Council of Technical Education and the National Council of Educational Research and Training, as well as representatives from industry bodies such as MESC, FICCI, and CII.
This task will focus on the growth of the gaming sector by driving institutional efforts to guide growth policies for this sector, establish standards for AVGC education in India, actively collaborate with industry and international AVGC institutes, and improve the Indian AVGC industry's global positioning.
Within 90 days, the AVGC Promotion Task Force will produce its first action plan.
